While many people have heard the story of how an aspiring cowboy first started Kemo Sabe in 1990, what’s lesser known is how far the store has come since its humble beginnings. The store’s evolution into becoming one of the most iconic storefronts in the country is credited to its 33-year love affair with the cowboy lifestyle and its western heritage. The store first opened its doors in a 400-square-foot-space in Snowmass Village with just two employees and a hodgepodge of western goods. For the first year, Tom and Nancy Yoder, made up the accounting department, the shipping and receiving department, the marketing department, the buying team, and of course, the sales associates. The first month in business Kemo Sabe generated a mere $1,281 in sales. Aspen’s shopping competition was fierce, and Kemo Sabe was the new kid on the block. Today, the western retail shop employs over 130 workers and has since expanded to five locations in Aspen and Vail, CO, Jackson, WY, Las Vegas, NV, and most recently, Park City, UT.
